The EU legal guarantee notice and GARAN label
From 27 September 2026, every online seller in the EU has to display a notice they didn't write and can't change.
Here's what it is, and what we've already done about it.
EU digital regulation has quadrupled over the past decade. The average law is roughly twice as long as it used to be. Keeping track of it, let alone how the rules interact with each other, is a real challenge even for people who do this full time.
This one's easy to miss if you're not watching closely. Every consumer in the EU is entitled to at least 2 years of legal guarantee protection on goods they buy, and as a seller you now have to inform them of that clearly, not bury it in your terms and conditions.
A few things about the rule worth knowing.
The notice itself is fixed. It's an official graphic published by the European Commission in every EU language, complete with a scannable QR code linking to more information. You don't write your own version, you display theirs, and online it has to be shown in colour.
There's a second, separate label called GARAN. That one is for producers who choose to offer a voluntary durability guarantee beyond the standard 2 years, at no extra cost, covering the whole product. If you're a seller rather than a manufacturer, that part doesn't fall on you directly. It's the producer's responsibility to create and supply the label.
As a seller only business, here's what we've done. Added the official harmonised notice to our site footer, visible from anywhere on the site, in the correct language for each market we sell into. Where a supplier's product genuinely carries a longer guarantee than the standard legal minimum, we display their GARAN label directly on that product page too, always sourced from the supplier since they're the ones accountable for it.
The value here isn't the QR code or the label design. It's that shoppers no longer have to dig through terms and conditions to know their rights.
Small addition to the site, real information gap closed. If you haven't checked where your store stands on this, the deadline isn't far off. That's exactly the kind of gap I like fixing before it becomes a problem, drop a comment or send me a message.
